Punjab government continued its relief and rescue efforts in flood affected areas, Sindh braced itself for the raging floodwater
It said a high flood peak is expected to pass through Guddu Barrage during next 24 hours. FFC said River Indus is at low flood stage at Guddu Barrage. Other main rivers including Jehlum, Ravi and Sutlej are flowing normal. Punjab Cabinet Committee for Flood Relief chairman Col. (R) Shuja Khanzada said rescue operation in Punjab province is underway while this process in South and Upper Punjab would be completed on Thursday. Shuja said that 274 people including children died due to floods and rains in the province, while an amount of Rs. 1.6 million per person has been distributed among more than 80 percent deceased families of flood-hit areas. He told media that district administration, Pakistan Army, Rescue 1122 and many NGOs were busy in rescue operations in 21 districts of the province where a total of 2.5 million people of 21 districts of Punjab have been affected. He said that Punjab government was engaged in relief and rescue of the flood affected through 17 helicopters of Army and 300 boats. He said 550,000 people have been shifted to safer places while 123,000 have been provided medical treatment and other needs (foods, camps and medicines etc.).
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif visited flood affected territories of Multan and other southern Punjab districts today. During the visit, he met flood victims and distributed food items among them. In Sindh, Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah visited Guddu Barrage and reviewed the condition of embankments of River Indus. The main flood is expected to reach its peak at Guddu Barrage during next 24 hours with expected flood water of 4-5 lakh cusecs. The expected water level in Sindh is likely to remain low because of several breaches in Punjab. The Sindh government has put irrigation and other authorities on high alert and evacuated people from Kacho (riverbed) area in Dadu district. The government has also directed authorities to evacuate people from Sukkur, Ghotki, Khairpur and Dadu districts.
